Tonight we begin SEED PACKING for the upcoming Garden Resource Program season! Spring is around the corner, so we need your help to make it all happen!
Based on your feedback at the end of the year strategic planning meeting and the leadership of gardeners Riet Schumack & Jackie Fulbright, we’re creating more opportunities and a lot better communication about how you, gardeners in the GRP, can come out to volunteer more. Below are the dates of upcoming seed packing events and an article by Riet Schumack about 2010 volunteer opportunities.

GRP VOLUNTEER KICK-OFF !! Get involved and help grow the GRP at FUN volunteer events this Winter & Spring! By Riet Schumack, Brightmoor Youth Garden
The Year 2009 was an incredible year for the Garden Resource Program (GRP).  We grew from 568 gardens in 2008 to 875 in 2009.  Projecting those numbers for 2010, we will probably increase to 1,000 gardens or more!  That is 260,000 transplants to grow, 58,000 seed packs to pack, tags to write, newsletters to send, more people at classes, etc.  Having had the privilege of working as an Americorps member in support of the GRP last year, I saw the amount of work that these numbers bring.  I also saw that a lot of this very important work is time consuming, repetitive and boring, unless we turn it into events, parties, and sharing times. With lots of hands pitching in, it becomes a fun time of gardeners getting acquainted, catching up, and learning.  For this reason, we asked people to sign up for volunteer opportunities at the GRP planning meeting in November and many did.  On January 13th, from 6-8 pm we will have our volunteer kick-off party and
begin seed packing.  Feel free to bring a snack to liven up the party.  We’ll continue events throughout the season (see calendar to the right of upcoming events).   The Garden Resource Program is a collaborative, not only between organizations but between all participating gardeners.  This is our program.  We call the shots, but we are also the life.  Come out and have a good time with fellow gardeners, helping our wonderful program to grow and making our city a great place to live and grow in.We purposely chose different days of the week, different times of day and different locations to give many people a chance to come out and participate.Would you like to take on a leadership role in organizing more volunteer opportunities for Garden Resource Program Participants? On February 24th from6-8PM join us at The Greening of Detroit (located at 1418 Michigan Ave.) for a short meeting with other gardeners who are interested in forming a “GRP
VOLUNTEER WORKGROUP”.  As Riet Schumack explains in the article above, there are lots of things we need help with and lots of gardeners ready and willing to take on a leadership role to make it happen! If this sounds interesting to you, we’d love to have you join us. For more information, please contact Lindsay at 285-1249.
