Inspiration is all about sharing your vision and energy to create a more liveable community. We incorporate a vision for Detroit that is equitable, safe, and healthy; a vision for Detroit that builds upon the strength of the people and landscape of the city, instead of relying upon outside resources; a vision that sees gardens and parks where others see desolation; a vision that sees a city that can define the future rather than being trapped in its past.

Detroit once swept the world as a model for the prosperous industrial city. Now it symbolizes the degradation of the Rust Belt. Sustainable Detroit recognizes that we are in a post-industrial era and must redefine ourselves to bring forth the city of the future. We must take a holistic approach to development, incorporating land planning, social needs, community health, regional resources, food, housing, jobs, art and more.

Achieving this Vision

With this vision before us, we begin to see that Sustainable Detroit is all about the process for creating a better Detroit. As we engage in that process and continue that work, we become a part of the vision. And the more people that participate in that process, the more the vision begins to achieve fruition and create real change in our communities.

We are also maintaining and growing an active network of people and organizations working on related issues. Through this networking, Sustainable Detroit is fostering the connections that make change possible. It can build a sense of unity and greater purpose among individuals, but it also produces the very practical advantage of informing people so that they may work together instead of in isolation. These connections can help distribute needed skills, time and money where it is most needed. In this way, the network supports existing projects in Detroit and helps foster the growth of new seeds. Our belief is that good work should not remain fragmented and ultimately ineffective!

The fact is, good things are happening in Detroit! The future of the city and SE Michigan is in our hands!
